Chapter Seventeen

When Eliza awoke the next day, she was relieved to remember it was Saturday and there was no morning surgery. Despite that it would be a busy morning if they wanted to get to Over Moreton and speak to Sam before the workshop closed. She dressed quickly in a navy skirt with matching jacket and went downstairs for breakfast. Archie followed her into the dining room two minutes later.

“You’re looking very formal for a Saturday. Have you forgotten there’s no surgery?”

“No, not at all.” She waited for Iris to place a dish of kedgeree on the table and disappear back to the kitchen. “We need to find Sam, Judith’s eldest son. Nobody’s seen him since the day Mrs Milwood died and Mr Wilson thinks he took a large sum of money from them. They’re desperate to know he’s safe and we need to establish where he’s been before the police find him.”

“You’re not interfering again, are you? If the police want to find him, shouldn’t you let them?”

“No, not at all.” She took a mouthful of the smoked haddock. “All the police know is that he disappeared on the day of the murder and as far as they’re concerned that’s enough reason to arrest him. They’re oblivious to the fact that the murderer administered the poison hours before Mrs Milwood died.”

“I don’t like this, Eliza.” Archie put down his knife and fork and gazed at his wife. “What if he is the murderer? If you go asking too many questions, he may turn nasty.”

“Don’t be silly. He’s a young boy, only about the same age as Henry. I’m not going to accuse him of anything. I want to help. Why would he hurt me?”

“Because young men have a habit of lashing out if they feel trapped.”

Eliza grimaced. “I know you worry, but there’s really no need. Besides, Connie will be with me, it’ll be two against one.”

Archie shook his head. “Promise me you’ll only look for him in places where there are other people. Don’t go walking into the fields where he could find you on your own.”

“What do you take me for? I’m going to Over Moreton, to Royal’s workshop where Sam works, and maybe to the boarding house where he rents a room. When did you ever see me walking through fields?”

The corners of Archie’s mouth finally turned into a smile. “I’m sure you must have done … once. All right, but be careful and be back here in time for luncheon.”

Fifteen minutes later, Eliza stood outside Connie’s front door and gave a hearty rap on the door-knocker. “Are you all set?” she asked as Connie opened her front door.

“I am. Are we walking or do you have the carriage?”

Eliza eyed her friend. “Not you too. You’re the second person today to suggest I plan on walking further than the village shop. No, don’t be silly. Archie’s asked the stable boy to get the carriage ready for us.”

“Jolly good, I was hoping you’d say that. Shall we
