Chapter Seventeen
When Eliza awoke the next day, she was relieved to remember it was Saturday and there was no morning surgery. Despite that it would be a busy morning if they wanted to get to Over Moreton and speak to Sam before the workshop closed. She dressed quickly in a navy skirt with matching jacket and went downstairs for breakfast. Archie followed her into the dining room two minutes later.
âYouâre looking very formal for a Saturday. Have you forgotten thereâs no surgery?â
âNo, not at all.â She waited for Iris to place a dish of kedgeree on the table and disappear back to the kitchen. âWe need to find Sam, Judithâs eldest son. Nobodyâs seen him since the day Mrs Milwood died and Mr Wilson thinks he took a large sum of money from them. Theyâre desperate to know heâs safe and we need to establish where heâs been before the police find him.â
âYouâre not interfering again, are you? If the police want to find him, shouldnât you let them?â
âNo, not at all.â She took a mouthful of the smoked haddock. âAll the police know is that he disappeared on the day of the murder and as far as theyâre concerned thatâs enough reason to arrest him. Theyâre oblivious to the fact that the murderer administered the poison hours before Mrs Milwood died.â
âI donât like this, Eliza.â Archie put down his knife and fork and gazed at his wife. âWhat if he is the murderer? If you go asking too many questions, he may turn nasty.â
âDonât be silly. Heâs a young boy, only about the same age as Henry. Iâm not going to accuse him of anything. I want to help. Why would he hurt me?â
âBecause young men have a habit of lashing out if they feel trapped.â
Eliza grimaced. âI know you worry, but thereâs really no need. Besides, Connie will be with me, itâll be two against one.â
Archie shook his head. âPromise me youâll only look for him in places where there are other people. Donât go walking into the fields where he could find you on your own.â
âWhat do you take me for? Iâm going to Over Moreton, to Royalâs workshop where Sam works, and maybe to the boarding house where he rents a room. When did you ever see me walking through fields?â
The corners of Archieâs mouth finally turned into a smile. âIâm sure you must have done ⦠once. All right, but be careful and be back here in time for luncheon.â
Fifteen minutes later, Eliza stood outside Connieâs front door and gave a hearty rap on the door-knocker. âAre you all set?â she asked as Connie opened her front door.
âI am. Are we walking or do you have the carriage?â
Eliza eyed her friend. âNot you too. Youâre the second person today to suggest I plan on walking further than the village shop. No, donât be silly. Archieâs asked the stable boy to get the carriage ready for us.â
âJolly good, I was hoping youâd say that. Shall we
